Microbial Growth

Hi everyone! I would like to share about what I have learnt on Tuesday. I learnt about the MICROBIAL GROWTH. Things that I want to highlight are the physical requirements and the chemical requirements. The physical requirements are include light, pH, temperature, water activity and osmotic pressure. The chemical requirements are water, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur, special growth factor (ferum) and trace elements (Mg).

On Thursday, I learnt about isolation, maintaining and preserving microbes. There are 2 basic culture techniques used in microbiology which are liquid culture and culture plates. The objectives of culturing bacteria is to obtain pure culture and to use suitable medium. Some of the bacteria grow by budding, spores and fragmentations.

The bacterial growth curve consists of lag phase, log phase, stationary phase and death phase. For direct measurements of microbial growth, we might have to count the bacteria by plate counts, filtration or direct microscopic count. Lastly, we have to transfer the strains to fresh medium then incubate and store in the refrigerator (short-term), deep-freezer or freeze dryer.

*We went to ICOE talk on Monday. The talk is about Biotechnology and it was awesome! Thanks to Dr. Wan for bringing us :)
