Hello everyone. So on Tuesday, we continue the lecture from previous class. The microbial nutrition. The lecture was good as always. There are 2 major nutritional concern which are energy source and carbon source. Energy source can be phototrophs or chemotrophs. Carbon source can be autotrophs or heterotrophs. We actually have to be a little bit creative to combine the name for example photoorganoheterotrophy. Photoorganoheterotrophy use light as energy source, organic molecules as carbon and electron source.
The lecture on Wednesday is about quizzes. Simple quizzes actually regarding microbial metabolism and nutrition. We have to be in group and answers all the questions given. For my group, we only got 4 out 10. The highest marks is 7 out of 10. This activity was really fun because it can enhance our communication skill with the group members and at the same time help us to revise this topic. After we finished the quizzes activity, we learned a new chapter which is MICROBIAL GROWTH.
There are some points that I highlighted. For growth rate, we have to see the number of cell and not the size of the cell. Water activity is the amount of water needed @ can be found in the microbes that are used to grow. Xerophiles may survived even dehydrated. Extremehyperthermophiles may live in high temperature (>131 degree celcius). Obligate anaerobes will die if there is a lot of oxygen. Why? Because they can not produce enzymes thus the oxygen becomes toxic.
*The presenters (Nuaim, Malik, Radin and Syafiq) were good! :)
