VIRUSES

Hello everyone! Last Friday, I learnt about Viruses with Dr. Wan. There are 4 cellular agents that we should know which is viruses, viroids, satellites, and prions. Viruses are :
  • major cause of disease
  • important members of aquatic world
  • important in evolution
  • important model systems in molecular biology

Virion size is about 10-40nm is diameter. They contain nucleocapsid and protein coat. Capsids can be in helical, icosahedral and complex. Envelope protein which are viral encoded may project from the envelope surface as spikes or peplomers. A virus may have single or double stranded DNA or RNA. Genomes can also be segmented or circular.

The steps for viral multiplication started with attachment to host cell, entry, uncoating of genome, synthesis, assembly and release. Next, types of viral infections can either be infections in bacteria and archaea, infections in eukaryotic cells or viruses and cancer. Did you know? Oncogenes is a cancer causing genes and it may come from the virus or may be transformed host proto-oncogenes.

The cultivation of viruses requires inoculation of appropriate living host. Viroids can cause plant disease!!
