Principles of Ecology & Biogeochemical Cycle

Hello guys! Today, lets talk about PRINCIPLES OF ECOLOGY. Before we go further into this topic, do you know what is ecology? Ecology is a systematic study of organisms and their interactions with the environment. This also reveals the relationships between living and non-living parts of the environment.

Hierarchy in Ecology

The factors that may act as limiting factors includes :
Abiotic
  • Temperature
  • Sunlight
  • Water
  • Wind
  • Rocks and soil
  • Periodic disturbances (eg: rain & earthquake)
Biotic
  • Animals
  • Plants
  • Microorganisms

Homeostasis is a dynamic balance of processes materials and organisms in the ecosystem and biosphere. The conversion of energy is never 100% efficient. Roles of microbes in the ecosystems are :
  1. Oxygen producer
  2. Nitrogen fixer
  3. Recyclers of dead materials
  4. Source of food in the food chain
  5. Contribute to evolution: remove weaker species through infections

The approaches for more effective Ecosystem Management
  • Stakeholders
  • Adaptive management
  • Natural resource management
  • Strategic management
  • Landscape level conservation
  • Command and control management

We also learned about Biogeochemical Cycle include Nitrogen cycle, Iron cycle, Carbon cycle, Sulphur cycle and Manganese cycle.

Next week will be our last week with Dr. Wan before the final exam~
